My host mom is about 50 years old(but very very beautiful!) so her son is 19 years old. He always hangs out with his friends so I think he is a spoiled son... I think home stay is a very very good opportunity for people who want to know different culture. Actually, I could share the different cultures between Japan and NZ. So don't be afraid! Try new things!
Bernat, I think homestay isn't common in Japan but some familly like invite students from overseas. I've heard so before. Try to search about the information:)

Homestay is great, but homestay in Japan is difficult, isn't it?
